How High is Your EQ... Really?

Ask yourself:
*When someone is hurting, is my first instinct to understand them or correct them?
*Can I listen to someone express how they feel without immediately explaining why they shouldn’t feel that way?
*When someone disagrees with me, do I become curious about their perspective or immediately become defensive?
*When I’m angry, disappointed, frustrated, or offended, do I respond thoughtfully or simply react?
*Can I apologize without following my apology with a “BUT…”?
*Am I emotionally aware enough to recognize that different people may require different responses from me?
Don't answer these questions based on the person you think you are.
Think about your actual interactions with your family, friends, coworkers, spouse, children, employees, customers, or even the person who got on your LAST nerve this week.
In the original blog, I discussed how Jesus gave us a masterclass in EQ by how He handled Mary. Even though He knew the outcome, He didn’t interact with the sisters exactly the same way; He acknowledged what was happening before Him and responded accordingly.
Could it be that the true test of our EQ isn’t how emotionally intelligent we believe ourselves to be, but how people consistently experience us?
If we consider the fruits of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23, how many of them are put into practice when we are interacting with other people? Those fruits of the Spirit are not just about how we relate to God; They should also be reflected in how we relate to people.
Think about it: Can you celebrate kindness while consistently being insensitive to people? Can you require self-control from others while allowing your own emotions to dictate your reaction?
How emotionally intelligent are you in the way you deal with the people God has placed around you?
